Data Science Internship 2024

Posted on: 4th September 2024

Our time with ITPS has been an incredibly rewarding experience, providing us with valuable insights into the practical applications of data science in a professional setting.

We’ve had the opportunity to work with real world data, offer our insights into AI, and contribute to meaningful projects that demonstrated the power of data-driven decision making.

What we’ve worked on

Although data science is an established element of ITPS’s portfolio, the dedicated team is relatively new and we were fortunate enough to be involved almost from its creation. One of our first projects saw us working on internal data science projects aimed at helping the business extract tangible benefits and actionable insights from its data, helping to guide strategic decisions and operational focus.

Every organisation holds huge amounts of data, but without proper analysis, much of it can be going to waste - it only becomes business gold when it can be cut and diced to provide business intelligence.  One of our projects was to cleanse and analyse ITPS’s data to create dashboards designed to help deliver valuable information at a glance, facilitating quick and informed decision making across the business.

To do this effectively we worked side by side with sales, service, and project management teams, getting to know how they functioned and understanding their collaborative working styles to identify dashboard solutions that could streamline operations and enhance efficiency.

ITPS’s reputation is built on open knowledge sharing with its customers, and part of Project Dashboard included making sure these frameworks could also provide customers with a personalised, secure view of their data and visualisations in real time.

While organisations are increasingly interested in the use of AI and data science, they don’t have the understanding or the expertise to help create solutions. As part of ITPS’s drive towards helping its customers incorporate the best of new technologies, we spent time evaluating how best to structure the data science team, and identifying the appropriate, proven technologies.

Our input involved designing AI solutions tailored for external projects, focusing on integrating AI cloud services into customised solutions for clients. Examples of these projects include searching and recommending different contacts based on specific needs, and indexing large image databases to make them searchable using AI.

What have we learned?

Our experience at ITPS has significantly deepened our understanding of how AI can be practically applied in the workplace. We gained first-hand knowledge of real world use cases for AI and data science, broadening our perspective around the impact these technologies can have on business operations.

Using new languages and learning new software tools such as PowerBI to create meaningful visualisations that uncovered trends and insights from the data, has improved our coding skills too.

We also polished up our communication skills and confidence by engaging with people from all departments to give us a different perspective on the data we worked with, and a deeper understanding of how each area of the business operates. This was instrumental in helping us tailor our work to meet the unique needs of each team, and learn how to present our findings in a clear and concise way for our internal audiences.

Working collaboratively as part of a team was an important aspect of our internship. We learned the importance of effective teamwork and how to individually contribute to a shared goal, enhancing our ability to work in a collaborative environment.

Overall, this has been an enriching experience that developed both our technical and soft skills. We’re really proud to have contributed to laying solid foundations for the data science team, and look forward to following its success.

We really felt part of the ITPS team, and our experience has prepared us to tackle data science challenges and contribute meaningfully to projects in the future, making us more confident in our careers as data scientists.
